The “Mass Shootings Map” Propaganda Should Convince You to Carry At All Times

If you use any form of social media whatsoever, you’ve probably seen the scary “mass shootings map” published by PBS, leading people to believe that they live in a terrifying place and that strict gun control is the only answer. You’ve probably read some of the cries for gun control and the stat of “more than one mass shooting a day” happening in the US. To see this propaganda, you’d think that people walk around with Uzis, randomly opening fire all the time. You’ve probably had this map indignantly posted at you in response to something you said about guns on social media.

But, you see, the map is BS. It’s a big old truckload of baloney sandwiches, steaming in the sun. It’s a manipulation that is being used to frighten people into thinking they’d be safer if none of us had the tools that we need to protect ourselves.

These terrifying dots are not all brazen shoot-outs in malls or movie theaters, during which someone takes out as many people as they can. But that’s how it’s portrayed. It’s posted without any real criteria except for the fact that it is incidents in which 4 or more people are shot, including the initial perpetrator. (A reader pointed out that these dots indicate shootings, not deaths in every case. This reduces  the dramatic effect of the map even more.)

Since biblical times, murders of groups have been recorded. I’m obviously not saying it’s okay, by any stretch of the imagination, but I’m saying that acting like this is a new thing fueled by ammo this is a blatant misrepresentation, designed to scare people into begging the government for protection.

But why would responsible gun owners being disarmed make anyone safer? 

I know it has been said so many times that it’s become a cliche, but when law-abiding people give up their guns, who do you think will have guns? We’ll have another horrifying incident and no one…NO ONE… will be prepared to stop it.

The Mass Shootings Map is missing important information

There are many vital stats missing. Here are just a few of the questions you should ask yourself when you look at that ridiculous mass shooting map.

  • Are any of these homeowners protecting their family from a home invasion? We don’t know – we just know that 4 people were shot.
  • Are any of these incidents of gang violence? We don’t know – we just know that 4 people were shot. Also, I’m pretty sure they don’t register their firearms or get permits to carry them
  • Are any of these shooters victims of the mental health industry, taking SSRI anti-depressants?  Actually we do know that quite a few of them were. Despite the fact that SSRIs don’t work on everyone who takes them, and on some they actually cause the person taking them to become violent and act on their thoughts, I don’t see anyone calling for a ban on SSRIs.
  • Are these all legally obtained guns? We don’t know – we just know that 4 people were shot. This most recent incident happened in California, home of some of the most stringent gun laws in the country. (It was nearly an 8-month process to get my own concealed carry permit here, and many were the hoops I had to jump through.)

If anything, this map should make you more convinced of the importance of carrying a firearm everywhere you go. You have an inalienable right as a human being to preserve your own life.

This is a scare tactic for non-critical thinkers

It’s full of holes. It’s a scare tactic, meant to frighten those who won’t think more deeply about the issue. It’s for people who read the headlines, but not the articles.

The map was published by PBS, who is sponsored in part by Pew Charitable Trust. While the map makes it look like gun violence is on the uptick, Pew reported in a recent article that it actually dropped in half a decade ago, and has remained steady since.

Several mass shootings this year have brought renewed attention to the issue of gun violence in America, and President Obama has again called for Congress to change the nation’s gun laws.

But the increased spotlight on guns does not reflect the overall gun violence trend in the country. Although most Americans think the number of gun crimes has risen, the U.S. gun homicide rate has actually stabilized somewhat in recent years, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of death certificate data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Between 1993 and 2000, the gun homicide rate dropped by nearly half, from 7.0 homicides to 3.8 homicides per 100,000 people. Since then, the gun homicide rate has remained relatively flat. From 2010 to 2013, the most recent year data are available, the number of gun homicides has hovered between 11,000 and 12,000 per year.

More mass shootings since Obama became president than …umm…forever

And speaking of Obama, there was a dramatic increase in “mass shootings” since he took office. And by dramatic, I mean it will blow your ever-loving-mind when you see the numbers.

Truthstream Media collected the following statistics on mass shootings since the Reagan administration. I knew it was bad under Obama, but wowza. Seeing it in print like this certainly shows that increased gun control isn’t slowing down the criminals one little bit.

When all incidents where four or more people were shot in a single event are broken out by president going back to Reagan (considering the database only stretches back to 1982), there just so happens to have been a startling increase in mass shootings since Obama, the most pro-gun control president America has had in modern history, took office.

George H. W. Bush: 1989-1993 (4 years) 12 mass murders

George W. Bush: 2001-2009 (8 years) 20 mass murders
Incidents with 8 or more deaths = 5

Barrack H. Obama
: 2009-2015 (in 7th year) 162 mass murders
Incidents with 8 or more deaths = 18

This article was originally written before Donald Trump became president, but as of 2018, there were 4 mass shootings under his watch. President Obama finished off with 24 mass shooting events.

I like a good conspiracy as much as the next prepper, even though I take a lot of them with a grain of salt. But ONE HUNDRED SIXTY TWO????????????

So no, this doesn’t make me want gun control.

Coincidentally, the day of one recent shooting, I had just written an article explaining why I felt it was vital that preppers be armed. The day before the Pulse night club shooting, I used a gun to protect my family. These incidents did nothing to change my mind. In fact, they solidified my stance even more.

Gun control does not keep you safer, which is a lesson we learned with the 2015 atrocity in Paris. No one had a firearm with which they could fight back.  They hid. And when hiding didn’t work, they were slaughtered. They were as helpless as a newborn kitten with its eyes closed. They were victims and weren’t even allowed a fighting chance to level the playing field.

It’s maps like these that make me more determined than ever to exercise my 2nd Amendment right and protect my family, wherever we go.

According to this mass shootings map, criminals are everywhere.  According to this mass shootings map, a jaunt to the mall, a field trip to the museum, walking into a bank, or going to a movie are all adventures that are fraught with danger. This mass shootings map doesn’t make me want to give my gun away. It makes me want to double up and avoid any place I’m not able to carry.

In fact, I think I’ll go throw a couple of extra magazines in my purse.

  • Kind of difficult to take an article trying to prove a point serious, when it cannot even spell correctly…. “Baloney sandwiches” I believe it is supposed to be “Bologna”

      “Bologna” is the name of a city in Italy, pronounced “boh-LOAN-ya.” But although the sausage named after the city in English is spelled the same, it is prononced “buh-LOAN-ee” and is often spelled “baloney.” Either spelling is acceptable for the sliced meat product.

      Then there is the expression “a bunch of baloney.” “Baloney” in this case probably originated as a euphemism for “BS.” When it means “nonsense,” the standard spelling is “baloney.” People who write “bunch of bologna” are making a pun or are just being pretentious.

    • Both are correct, with “baloney” commonly used for denoting bs. Bologna is used more often for the sandwich meat.

    • It is poorly written, but spelling and grammar are the least of it. Those I can look past.
      While I agree with the position on gun control, this article does not convince me of the position. Something as simple as changing some of the labels on the “mass shooting” list to “mass murder” is just a big red flag that not enough research was done or cherry picking is being done to bolster a point.
      None of this is necessary since all the data points to this article’s stance on gun control to be logical. Articles like this just turns one off on principle. The contradictions in this article are many and troubling. To state that gun murders are down, and in the next paragraph to talk about how under Obama mass shootings are up, drastically? How are gun murders down if mass shootings are up so much? Why fluctuate between the two. The article is supposed to be about mass shootings and starts out with the point that the map doesn’t take any real data into consideration. Then the author proceeds to do the same thing, to bolster their own position. How can you call someone out for disingenuously using data, then do the same yourself?
      The whole thing reads like it was written by a high school student.

  • I couldn’t agree with you more, Daisy. Even though I believe you are giving too much credit to the government. As investigative reporters have been told often, “Follow the money.” This isn’t just about governmental power, capitalism is also very powerful and the $$ which flow with it even influencing our mass media. Watching the news about San Bernadino yesterday and watching how each major news covered it. Look further into who’s telling us where to look. As a journalist, you are more than aware of how we can be manipulated by words especially those which are used to raise our emotions.

  • What a warped analysis. Too many errors to make it worth rebutting, but it shows a lack of critical thinking. One reason mass several mass shootings have occurred under Obama (besides the fact he was handily reflected, giving him more time in office) is that the election of a black man whipped the paranoid, racist haters into a frenzy. Their extreme vitriol, their pseudo-Chtistianity and their echo chamber has encouraged hatred and a justification of violence towards him and anyone supporting him, which in turn has encouraged other wingnuts to actually take action. You might want to stick to prepping, and keep your politics to yourself.

    • It’s a lack of critical thinking to show statistics? I didn’t even pull a conclusion from those stats, because critical thinkers can do that for themselves. I showed a statistic that YOU don’t like.

    • Funny. Obama (and PBS) represent the Theocratic Universalism that has run the USA since long before its founding.

      Look up some of these listed “events.” It’s not difficult. What you’ll find is that most of these “mass shootings” are what Chicago regards as normal weekend activity in the Ravenswood neighborhood. You can guess what “occupation” most of the shooters and their victims hold, and what color is their skin. These are facts that belie the central dogma of the Universalist Cathedral, and so to utter them is deemed BLASPHEMY! How DARE you suggest that this has something to do with race! Racist! Homophobe! Christian Zealot! You shall be cast out of your job, sent to re-education, driven from polite society! Go back to the sewer from which you came!

      I’m quite sure Copernicus got a similar treatment…by similar types of people.

  • First, I admit, I am not usually a pro-firearm person; I have gone on family hunting trips and know how to shoot a rifle, but routinely carrying a gun is not the way I want to live my life. I think there is great danger in the ease in which someone can take another person’s life for something like petty theft or personal dispute. Even so, you make some strong points, and your blog is making me reconsider my position. This article made total sense to me up to the point where you linked the increase in killings to President Obama. You lost me on that one. The change in this country has been one of increasing inflammatory rhetoric, vigilante attitudes, and pro-extremism as justification for violence. Our moral compass has gone awry, and the issues are far too complex to blame on one person, who does not operate in a vacuum. It has been truly disheartening to see how much more divided this country has become, wherein people are not willing to work together, but rather, are determined to make each other fail. The world is a far more scary place now. How to stop the madness? Let more people carry guns? Change the president? I don’t have easy answers, but this blogpost only seems to fan the flames. I have enjoyed your site, but I am out.

    • I agree, Blythe. Daisy makes some good points, but her argument was not logical in many ways. Esp on blaming Obama.

      It should be noted that a concealed carry man was on campus near the shootings in Roseburg. He refused to take out his gun and go after the gunman because he assumed that other concealed carry people and the police would think he was a bad guy shooter and take him out. It could have been mayhem with all sorts of people shooting at each other.

      Also, most (something like 55%-60%) of these mass shootings are domestic violence events (as has been reported elsewhere). Some vicious, awful, man taking out his family as well as his significant other. Do you really think some poor woman would have been able to save herself from someone like this? When guns were already in the home?

      And if you want to talk about the money trail, how about the one where gun manufacturers pour huge money into the NRA, enough to control them.

      The increase in inflammatory rhetoric, vicious racism, and extremist rhetoric does not help anything and is much more un-american than I was brought up to believe.

      I say this as a kidnap victim at gunpoint many years ago. My having a gun would have gotten me and my friends killed.

      He thinks that routinely carrying a gun is not, “the way I want to live my life” as if this changes the reality of a harsh cruel world in which he and those he loves are just bunnies grazing in a meadow under the eye of a hungry hawk. Do you think he still has a, ‘blankie’ to hide under and believes in magic wands to make all the evil in the world go away?

      He thinks there is great danger in the ease in which someone can take another person’s life, as if a baseball bat, a pair of fists, and any other number of ways to Murder By Number (que the punk band, The Police) is a difficult thing. But we need to carry to defend ourselves more than ever. These are perilous times and the people without a “moral compass” are becoming more numerous. Carrying a lethal weapon is an awesome responsibility, but self-defense is a God-given right. No one has a right to try to take your life. Someday, you may save another person’s life, if not your own. America is not like she used to be. God Bless.

  • Just wanted to correct one thing. This map gets its data from the shooting tracker which defines it as 4 or more people “shot”, not killed, which is how they inflate their numbers.

    Here is the part of your article I’m talking about: “It’s posted without any real criteria except for the fact that it is incidents in which 4 or more people are killed, including the initial perpetrator”

    And I put “shot” in quotes because they include incidents in their data where injuries were not due to being shot, but they count them anyway.

  • Good article with very relevant facts and figures, which is why those “elite” bloggers are starting to target you Daisy. I know your politics and prepper advice are good with me and probably millions of others in this still great country. Keep up the fine work.

  • It is a mainstay of current Universalist theology that “we’re all the same.” Every member of every race, creed or culture is identical (under the skin.) Any attempt to diverge from this Dogma is deemed BLASPHEMY, punishable by being labeled a Racist, Intolerant, Chauvinist (and being fired, labeled unemployable, and shunned from society.) Guardians of this Dogma look just like those who attacked Copernican cosmology in darker times. The more things change….

    It is thus blasphemy to point out that most of these “mass” shootings are in fact run-of-the-mill crimes committed by America’s underclass. It is extreme blasphemy to note the race of most of those involved. For example, a shooting in Rockford IL involving 5 people was the result of an underclass party where someone fired a single shotgun round into a crowd, causing only minor wounds.

    The goal is to conflate street gang warfare among people well known to each other with anonymous shootings that might affect Middle Class people. It is one more Lie With Data brick in the Left-collectivist wall. PBS is among our Modern clergy, tasked with fighting a growing groundswell of heresy among realists who rage under the groupthink of this Dogma.

  • Bless you for pulling this information together for me! I was just talking about this issue with someone and it was really frustrating to talk about it with them because they were using emotional arguements vs factual and of course had no desire to actually learn and debate this issue.

  • I totally used to agree with you and your analysis, because it totally makes sense! If you ban guns, then only ‘bad’ people can get guns, and now everyone else is screwed!

    But after more research, the statistics tell another story. There is a real clear relationship between gun ownership rates and gun violence rates. I think this article gives the best overview of the situation: http://tewksburylab.org/blog/2012/12/gun-violence-and-gun-ownership-lets-look-at-the-data/ (it gives two graphs, and basically shows that gun ownership and poverty play into gun violence, and poverty is more of a factor, but gun ownership plays a significant role too.)

    I personally don’t like guns, but at the end of the day I just want the policy that is statistically the safest. If it’s banning all guns, or everyone gets 2 guns, or, idk, when you buy a gun it comes with a free dinner coupon to Olive Garden, whatever has the best results should be the policy.

    Well, no worries, I’m sure that another Second Amendment Hero will — BANG! — will calmly put down his RedBull-and-vodka — BANG! — and take deadly aim at me in the dark nightclub with the flashing lights and the pounding music and — BANG! — do the job of 11 SWAT team members — BANG!     I always ask the person do you know if your family was a family of slave, and remember at one point there were more Irish slaves then blacks. Blacks were field slaves and Irish were work hands.

    It is also questionable since the 1850’s if any amendment was truly ratified. After the war (between the States), the south was forced to return to the union, but did not do so by declaration.

    Ok, what does that mean? It means that the states who declared war, were forced to rejoin and never were rejoined as required by law.

    It means that most states who like Georgia, never became legally a state of the United States again, they only PRETENDED to do so. Those senators are not actually Untied States senators, but the independent state of Georgia. This is the list of states which resend from the United States and did not again return, Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia & The District of Columbia.

But when the right to vote at any election for the choice of electors for President and Vice President of the United States, Representatives in Congress, the Executive and Judicial officers of a State, or the members of the Legislature thereof, is denied to any of the male inhabitants of such State, being twenty-one years of age,(See Note 15) and citizens of the United States, or in any way abridged, except for participation in rebellion, or other crime, the basis of representation therein shall be reduced in the proportion which the number of such male citizens shall bear to the whole number of male citizens twenty-one years of age in such State.
    Section 3. No person shall be a Senator or Representative in Congress, or elector of President and Vice President, or hold any office, civil or military, under the United States, or under any State, who, having previously taken an oath, as a member of Congress, or as an officer of the United States, or as a member of any State legislature, or as an executive or judicial officer of any State, to support the Constitution of the United States, shall have engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the same, or given aid or comfort to the enemies thereof. But Congress may by a vote of two-thirds of each House, remove such disability.
    Section 4. The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.
    Section 5. The Congress shall have power to enforce, by appropriate legislation, the provisions of this article.

    I dont think it actually has anything to do with him being president per say.

    I think it could be we are seeing the result of our increasingly hyper-consumer, hyper-techo dependent, lack of connections to others in “real reality,” and not “virtual reality.” Lack of connection to nature could play apart of it too. Increased obesity, and consumption of ultra-processed foods could be a factor. Cubical jobs that produces only 1s and 0s and nothing really tangible. Flip a switch, did it ever really exist?

    I often wonder the US is THE first world country. We have just about everything we could want at our fingertips, delivered to our door.
    And yet so many of us are on some kind of anti-depressant it is showing up in our water, and even in the brains of fish.

    More and more are living paycheck to paycheck to include those in the middle class.

    I dont think an increase in shootings has any relationship to who occupies the White House. We are just seeing the results of a sick society, and the cause is our own doing in the hyper-consumer culture we pursue.
