Still Think the Economy is “Recovering”? Walmart Is Closing 269 Stores, Including These

The economy is collapsing around us, and if you aren’t already prepared, it’s time to get with it ASAP, because Wal-Mart is closing 269 stores. If that doesn’t ring loud, clanging warning bells for you, then nothing will convince you of the need to prepare for economic collapse.

If you listened to the State of the Union address (listen for free) last week, you heard President Obama accuse those who criticized the financial situation in the United States of  “peddling fiction.” However, with oil prices plummeting, stock markets around the globe tanking, and businesses shutting their doors left and right, it seems that the only peddler of false tales is our fearless leader himself. When the biggest retailer in America is struggling to stay afloat, I call BS (Baloney Sandwiches) on the notion that “our economy is recovering.”

Since last year, Wal-Mart, that ubiquitous symbol of American discount retail and bad taste, has seen its stock value plummet an almost unfathomable $80 billion.

Walmart Is Closing 269 Stores

Today, it was announced that Wal-Mart is closing 269 stores across the globe by the end of January. (Or as they like to call it, they are “sharpening their portfolio.” These stores are the ones in the United States.

Zero Hedge isn’t shy about pointing fingers toward the last straw for the struggling retail giant: “Behold: the effect of an across the board minimum wage hike.”

Even if you hate Wal-Mart and the corporate greed it stands for, another 16,000 people will find themselves out of work by month’s end.

The financial crisis is also rippling across Canada. As the Canadian dollar declines in value, the effects are felt as prices for imported goods like food and other necessities skyrocket.

Are you prepared for the impending collapse?

If you haven’t been busy preparing already, there really is no time left to lose. Take these steps immediately.

  • Take your money out of the bank ASAP.  If you still keep your money in the bank, go there and remove as much as you can while leaving in enough to pay your bills. Although it wasn’t a market collapse in Greece recently, the banks did close and limit ATM withdrawals.  People went for quite some time without being able to access their money, but were able to have a sense of normalcy by transferring money online to pay bills or using their debit cards to make purchases.  Get your cash out. You don’t want to be at the mercy of the banks.
  • Stock up on supplies.  Make sure you are prepped. If you’re behind on your preparedness efforts and need to do this quickly, you can order buckets of emergency food just to have some on hand. (Learn how to build an emergency food supply using freeze dried food HERE) Hit the grocery store or wholesale club and stock up there, too, on  your way home. Once you have these emergency supplies stashed, focus on filling in the gaps in your supply as quickly as you can.
  • Load up on fuel.  Fill up your gas tank and fill your extra cans also. Right now, the price of oil is dropping. Use that as an opportunity to stock up, because quite often, fuel prices skyrocket in the wake of a market crash. Be sure to store it properly for both safety and longevity.
  • Be prepared for the potential of civil unrest. If the banks put a limit on withdrawals (or close like they did in Greece) you can look for some panic to occur. If the stores dramatically increase prices or close..more panic. Be armed and be prepared to stay safely at home. (Although this article was written during the Ferguson race riots, civil unrest follows a similar pattern regardless of the cause.)
  • Be prepared for the possibility of being unable to pay your bills. If things really go downhill, the middle class and those who are the working poor will be the most strongly affected, as they have been in Greece during that country’s ongoing financial crisis.  This article talks about surviving if you are unable to pay all of your bills.

Is your local store on the list?

I don’t do much shopping at Wal-Mart, because I dislike their corporate ethics. (I know, complete oxymoron. Sometimes I find myself limited by the English language.) However, the loss of these massive stores will cause an immediate crisis in many communities in which they’ve driven all of the Mom and Pop stores out of business. Locals will have no choice but to travel to purchase their necessities, the unemployment lines will swell, and our already thinly stretched social assistance system is likely to reach the breaking point.

Good luck, friends. I hope you’re ready.

  • What this article doesn’t say is that it is transferring employees to nearby stores.the stores that are closing are within a 10 miles radius of another Walmart. And majority of the closing are in Brazil. The closing are stores that are not gaining money and thus costing more than they bring in, due to other nearby stores. This article was written by someone who doesn’t have all the facts or is hiding the truth to better suit their own beliefs. Yes we are still facing an economic crisis but don’t go spreading fear for the wrong reasons.

    • Do you really, truly think that employees of both stores will all get the same amount of hours? That every single employee of both stores will remain fully employed with no reduction in the amount they take home? A corporation wouldn’t close a location and simply transfer all of the operating costs like wages and benefits. It’s fine to disagree with my point, but there’s no need to insult my intelligence or my integrity. Nothing I said here was untrue, nor am I “hiding the truth.”

    • Jason, did you even read the story and go through the list of where these stores are closing. The list above in the story is only for the United States and I did not see any stores on this list that are in foreign countries. The City of Wichita Kansas is closing three stores alone. Have you gone through this entire closing list and verified that there are other Walmarts within 10 miles of the ones that are closing. Some people have pointed out below, that there are no other Walmarts that are within the 10 miles that your claiming. So to use your own words against you. Your comments were written by someone who doesn’t have all of the facts or is hiding the truth to better suit their own beliefs.”

      • The U.S. is NOT seeing a recovery. The policies of this administration have further weakened the economy. The middle class is being destroyed.

I work in a small business and have friends who own and/or work in other small businesses.

Obama’s War on the Middle Class
“…One of the hallmarks of all socialist countries is the is the absence of an independent middle class.

From the Bolshevik experiment in Russia to socialist Venezuela today, it is necessary for communist leaders to eliminate that class of citizens who are not dependent on government for their welfare.

Political theorists from Aristotle to Locke understood that a truly INDEPENDENT AND PROSPEROUS MIDDLE CLASS WAS ESSENTIAL TO THE COLLECTIVE WELL-BEING OF ANY SOCIETY.

The middle class has always, in every society, been characterized by qualities of social restraint and economic realism — a shrewd and skeptical conservatism that serves to restrain the grandiose plans of utopian revolutionaries and embittered reactionaries alike.”

One-fifth of U.S. workers were laid off in past five years, study says
“Nearly 40% said it took more than seven months to find employment and about one in five of laid-off workers said all they could find was a temporary position.

Almost half — 46% — of the estimated 30 million layoff victims who found new jobs said they paid less than their old ones, according to the survey of 1,153 U.S adults done over the summer.”

Yet, despite the sluggish labor market and many thousands still unemployed, Obama promises executive amnesty for illegals.

“The Center for Immigration Studies reports 100% of Employment growth in the U.S. since 2000 went to immigrants.

On a population adjusted basis, the numbers look horrific. Population-wise, native US citizens account for two-thirds of the working-age population growth, yet FEWER work today.

Here’s the harsh reality: 17 million working-age native US citizens were NOT working in the first quarter of 2014 than in 2000.”

    • Jason,
Speaking of facts, how are we going to determine that your statements are factual without seeing some references… just saying.

  • Well, anyone with half a brain knows that most of what comes out of Obama’s mouth is a lie. “Yes, we can” “You can keep your doctor” “we are going to lower your health care premiums by $2,500” “I will not violating the 2nd amendment” “the economy is strong” “we are the strongest country in the world” “I will get rid of the Patriot Act” and so on.

Food has risen tremendously. Last year I bought 25 pounds of spelt flour on Amazon for $44. This year it is almost $60. That is crazy. But I’m sure $60 will look cheap in a year or so.

Where do you put your money if not in a bank? Putting a lot of money in a home safe is worrisome too. If things get that bad, I don’t care if you have a safe bolted to your floor. Someone could still shoot the lock off and take your money, especially if you are not home. What about credit unions and local banks? Any thoughts?

    • Donna, you are the one spreading lies. I still have my doctor of 20 years. President Obama did NOT say: he would get rid of the Patriot Act (created by Bush Admin.) Nor did he say he would lower insurance premiums by $2500 he said the ACA could reduce premiums by up to $2500. He has not and will not violate the second amendment. And he speaks the truth by saying: “the economy is strong” “we are the strongest country in the world” because it IS and we ARE. Please change the channel!

      • What flavor is the Kool-Aid you’re drinking? Initially I was going to be nice, but when you begin insulting both me and the other readers here, I’m no longer feeling especially tolerant of your parroted rhetoric.

        1) Just because you have your doctor doesn’t mean we all do. Over 214,000 doctors have opted out of the Obamacare exchange, so if someone’s insurance company no longer offered them a policy due to ACA, they may indeed have lost their doctor.

        http://www.cnsnews.com/mrctv-blog/barbara-boland/over-214000-doctors-opt-out-obamacare-exchanges

        2) Patriot Act
“Then-Senatorial candidate Obama in 2003 branded the Patriot Act “shoddy and dangerous” and pledged to dump it. He made the pledge in response to a candidate’s survey by the National Organization for Women. Obama reneged on the pledge. But he did work to shave off some of the more blatantly outrageous constitutional abuses in the Act by imposing some civil liberties protections in the gathering and use of intelligence, on the use of torture in interrogations, and requiring at least some semblance of due process in court proceedings. But that paled in significance when Obama in a letter and with little fanfare and comment routinely let stand most of the still noxious provisions in the Act.”

        4) Obama has gone around Congress and used 2 executive orders to breack the 2nd Amendment, with more action threatened in the future.

        6) “we are the strongest country in the world” because it IS and we ARE.

Our power is fading by the day, as Obama weakens our economy, allows jobs to be sent overseas, rips out the parts of the constitution he doesn’t care for, militarizes police forces causing distrust between citizens and police, and stirs up animosity between races and religions by his insistence on politically correct blindness.

      • Kathi,

Obama said this MULTIPLE times. Listen to his own words in different speeches.

      • Kathi, I’m assuming you can do simple math.

My insurance premium BEFORE the ACA: $257/mo for a policy with a wide network, $1,500 deductible and $3,500 maximum annual out-of-pocket. That policy became ILLEGAL under ACA because it did not provide coverage for maternity benefits (I’m 62), pediatric dental care, and my annual check-up, which used to cost me about $250 including lab work. Therefore it WAS a lie that I’d be able to keep the policy I liked if I wanted. He made it illegal for that plan to exist.

My insurance premium AFTER the ACA (for 2016): $698/mo for a policy with a very narrow network (80% of my physicians from pre-ACA days are NOT covered), a $2500 deductible and a $6275 maximum out-of-pocket.

The difference, obviously, is $441/mo or $5292/year MORE premiums, plus $1000 MORE in deductible and nearly $3000 MORE in maximum out-of-pocket, which by the way doesn’t even apply to out-of-network providers, who end up being used because in-network are so hard to find.

We may be the economically strongest country in the world, because it takes decades to destroy an economy, but it doesn’t mean you’re economically strong. Just like being the strongest patient in the ICU doesn’t make you healthy.

  • The neighborhood market in my town is one of the closings and there is not another store within 10 miles. We live in a rural area with very few job opportunities. This will definitely effect us.

  • Daisy,

The world economy is indeed crashing. There have been enough wake-up calls to make that obvious. Who, outside of Walmart, truly knows for certain what their plans are. In the end, they may or may not take their employees back. Time will tell. My son-in-law and his wife both work for Walmart in San Bernardino so we’re concerned to say the least.

You can never have enough food stores. Just sitting here making a list of items I need to add to my deep pantry. It’s a never ending job.

I see you have a link to Ms Pennington’s article regarding the Canadian situation. Yes, the value of the loonie dropped, nothing new. It’s been lower in the past. Hoping that it doesn’t fall too much lower. As far as food prices are concerned, that article shows prices in Nunavut where everything is flown in.

    Current prices are as follows:
    1 gallon 2% milk $3.98
    broccoli $1.67
    carrots 2lb $0.88
    oatmeal 2lb $1.99
    chicken legs $1.79/lb

That article was pure fear porn. You could’ve checked the flyers online to confirm those prices in the article. Just sayin’…….

Regardless, stock what you eat and eat what you stock. Buckle up folks, gonna be a bumpy ride.

    kk

    • Ah – I didn’t realize those were Nunavut prices. My daughter lives outside Toronto and said she has noticed a definite increase over the past week, so I went with the link I found regarding the situation. 🙂 Thanks for your insight!

      • Not saying that they didn’t increase, but so far just the usual winter increase. If it continues to rise, then yes, it’ll be bad. My sources for the grocery prices were Loblaws, Food Basics and Sobeys.

We don’t have a root cellar but figured out that I can store items in my car trunk. Have been keeping extra loaves of bread there with no harm done. Added butter and that seems okay too. Planning on picking up extra carrots tomorrow and storing them there as well. I don’t drive unless I have to, so this works well. If I need to go out, I can take the box out and leave it in the garage till I get back.

This’ll be a very interesting experiment. I put a thermometer in the trunk to keep track of the temperature. Who knows, it may work well.

        kk

        • That’s a great idea, using your trunk! 🙂 I’ll be interested to hear how the veggies last in there. I thought I had insulated a closet enough to keep it a cold room, but alas, my apples did not agree.

          • Daisy

The insulated closet was a good idea but you need to have cool air circulating through it. May be difficult if your outside temps dont’t go low enough.

Apples create a lot of gas that when accumulated will cause degradation. What I’ve used are those “green bags” from Amazon. Of course, that would entail buying several boxes of them if you have a lot of produce. I’ve used them for my organic baby spinach and kept it fresh for over 3 weeks. Apples would of course last much longer.

Would love to build a root cellar in the basement but the spot I’d selected has the fuse panel in it. Apparently it’s against code here in Ontario.

My extended family who live in the former Yugoslavia have an outdoor “closet” where they keep their harvested produce. Must have been insulated to keep everything usable. Just a thought, may work for you if you can find perhaps a small shed that can be insulated.

We all are entitled to our opinions. No need to insult each other. This coming crash will affect us all and we need to work together to come up with usable solutions.

            Prep on!

  • I thought the big reset was coming this past September. Every day that passes…it’s a wonder the petrodollar system is still holding together.

  • The two closing in our city are in a very wealthy part of town. I imagine they aren’t doing very well. No one wants to shop there!

    • The loss of those stores IS going to affect a lot of people, whether one agrees with the company’s corporate ethics or not. I also found this to be disturbing news.

  • But nobody says anything about building and opening new stores!
We have second Walmart being build just about 5 miles away from the first one.
There are others not far away either. Maybe they are closing ones that are loosing money.

    • Mia –

Hi! Thank you for that information. 🙂

Wow, that is so strange that they’re building a new one so close to the one they had to close. If they’re losing money at one, why would they put a new one 5 miles away? Anyone have a guess, because I’m stumped.

  • I believe this is just a part of Walmart’s business plan… what they’ve been doing for years. They’ve been known to open up two stores within a town that really only needs one for their population. Once all the small, local, businesses are out of business because the most all of the town goes to one of the two Walmarts, Walmart closes the under-preforming store in that town…. leaving the residents only one option… one Walmart. It’s a win-win for Walmart… they save tons in costs, remove their competition and condition people to shop only at one store.

    I do not shop Walmart…ever.
The many Americans that call Walmart their store of choice are the problem.
There’s a real cost to low prices… sad that most Walmart shoppers are too stupid to see in-depth correlations…. or just don’t care because they can get cheap cigarettes and chocolate there.

  • What should alarm everyone about Wal-Mart…see I was I T guy for them…when they “transitioned to JIT…and “shelf space real estate” I met and helped Sam Walton achieve this new “para-dime” …see vendors buy space on the shelf… walmart pays nothing for all the stuff in their stores…instead vendors pay them…Wal-Mart then gets commission for selling…that is added to rental each month…before there was selling at volume discounts…now vendors vie for shelf space…this was genius…SW…really was…if wal marts are closing it is because no one is buying…buy a lot…vendors can not afford the rent…this EXTREMELY SERIOUS…THEY “VENDORS” ARE NOT SELLING ENOUGH TO PAY RENT…WOW…well looks like this is it…it USA …LAWKI..OVER…GET READY HERE IT COMES.
Thank God I a Army Ranger…I will see you on the golden side of reset… I think 80% will not survive this…Gods judgement is at times harsh…but you get what you earn…not what you want…get what you need…not what you want/desire…RGR777out!
