If you ever wondered what results a controlled experiment of Monsanto farming methods would yield, look no further than the unwilling residents of Molokai.  Until 1969, by fact of its geographical isolation, Molokai was home for over 100 years to a leper colony.  With the arrival of Monsanto’s test fields, the beautiful island has become a laboratory and the islanders are being treated as the lab rats.

The island of Molokai looks like paradise.  Travel brochures call it the “old Hawaii” and the most Hawaiian of the islands in the archipelago. It has a small population of between 5500-7500 residents.  It is covered in waterfalls, rainforests, and rolling hills, and the island exudes a unique lush green atmosphere.

Amidst this wild tropical beauty, Death has come to the island.  Death arrived, hidden like lethal warriors in a Trojan horse, beneath a shiny veneer of jobs and prosperity for the islanders, most of which turned out to be false promises.

1850 acres of the island has been planted with Monsanto’s Bt corn.  Workers wear head to toe protective gear during spraying, including respirators.  Nearby residents, however, are not provided with such equipment and have no option but to breathe in the toxic dust that comes from the fields.

The State Health Department has said that  there is no proof genetically modified crops are dangerous to the people of Hawaii or any place where they’ve been tested.

The people of Molokai tell a different story.  They tell the same story that the people of India told when Monsanto invaded their cotton fields.  They tell the same story the farmers of Argentina told when Monsanto polluted their tobacco fields with Roundup.

Many Molokai residents have been suspicious of Monsanto since the beginning.  Walter Ritte, a Molokai resident, said, “We have concerns. These concerns have been pushed under the rug, and everything that’s being grown is a big secret.  Nobody is telling us anything. We’re afraid for our health, we’re afraid for our children’s health, the cornfields surround our town.  Well what is a GMO, what is going on?”  In November 2005, Monsanto executives paid lip service with a town meeting with concerned residents of Molokai.  Ray Foster, the research general manager of Monsanto-Hawaii, said, “We’re very proud of what we do, and we welcome the questions.  We’ve been planting biotech’s products now for 10 years. We’ve planted over a billion acres, and so there hasn’t been one case of harm to people or the environment.” (Source: Island Breath)

The state health department agrees with Monsanto executives that there is no problem at all.  Statistics for cancer, miscarriage, birth defects, respiratory problems, neurological issues, and skin disease on the island are not easily found.

Much has been discussed about the dangers of consuming GMOs.  But what about the farming practices themselves?  There are serious environmental concerns and human health hazards that relate to the toxic chemcials and the “drift” from Monsanto’s fields.

Monsanto likes to say that Roundup (glysophate) has a low level of toxicity and that is the reason it is their pesticide of choice.  A report by Thanal.com (an India-based  Research, Advocacy, Education and Action Trust)explains how this “low toxicity” is damaging human and animal health:

As the acute toxicity – reflected in the WHO classification of glyphosate is low, it has long been promoted as safe.  However, recent evidence shows substantial adverse health and environmental effects, especially of the formulated products.

The marketed formulations of glyphosate, such as Roundup, contain adjuvants (accessory chemicals), usually 50-60 percent, added to enable the active ingredient to work more effectively. There is mounting evidence that the adjuvants are more toxic than glyphosate and/or potentiate its toxic effects. Publicly available information about the nature of these chemicals is incomplete because adjuvants are treated as proprietary secrets by the manufacturer. One major known agent used e.g. in Roundup is ‘POEA’.

Although glyphosate itself shows low acute toxicity, serious poising effects such as severe eye irritation and injury, skin and respiratory problems, and damage to lung tissue have been recorded with formulated products – probably due to the presence of POEA. Farm workers exposed to Roundup, e.g. by eye rubbing, has been reported to “have caused swelling of eye and lid, rapid heartbeat and elevated blood pressure. Other reported effects of POEA are: vomiting, diarrhoea, haemolysis (destruction of red blood cells), altered mental status, and pulmonary oedema; ingestion can cause in addition pharyngitis, abdominal pain, liver and renal damage, and erosions of the oesophagus, oropharynx, and stomach.

Recent experiences and studies show a wide range of long-term adverse health effects, again mostly related to formulated products, such as leukaemia and other cancers, skin diseases, and birth defects, gastrointestinal problems, and alterations to the central nervous system. Other findings link glyphosate and especially formulations with affecting embryo development, damage cells and DNA, and interrupting the hormone system. In addition, POEA contains dioxin, which causes cancer and damage to the liver and kidneys in humans. A new study found adverse effects of four glyphosate-based herbicides on human embryonic, placental and umbilical cord cells at dilution levels far below agricultural recommendations, corresponding to low levels of residues in food or feed.

Although the only evidence on Molokai is anecdotal, the case for chemical drift causing myriad health problems is strong.  A landmark case in France last year found Monsanto “guilty” when a French farmer successfully sued the mega-corporation for effects sustained after he inhaled Monsanto’s “Lasso” weed-killer:  he suffered neurological problems including memory loss, headaches and stammering.  Victories like this are rare, however, because no matter how numerous the complaints, the company generally is not held accountable.

Evidence is slowly increasing as independent studies take place.  Sayer Ji of Green Med Info just released an article with evidence of the link between breast cancer and Round-up.  “An alarming new study finds that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup weedkiller, is estrogenic and drives breast cancer cell proliferation in the parts-per-trillion range.”

What’s happening in Hawaii isn’t my story to tell. It means more when it comes directly from residents of Molokai…those who are under siege in this chemical warfare waged by Monsanto, on the island many of them have called home for generations.  The quotes without sources are taken directly from emails by people who wish to remain anonymous, because they fear retaliation for speaking out.

“Native Hawaiians have the highest health issues in the islands and this little island we have so little resources for ourselves that we have to malama, care for, those resources and we have to look at not only today but for tomorrow’s people, the children…I have also heard about people in [Manilla] Camp having different types of health issues, which they’ve never had before, things which doctors can’t describe what causes them. It’s a scary thing to deal with, something you don’t know enough about.” (source)

“We moved from Maui to Molokai 2 years ago. To be with our grandkids. About 2 months after moving in, I broke out with a bloody rash…I went to the local hospital, they gave me two shots, would not tell me what it was. Went back……no record of me being there.”

“Our daughter lost a baby here..many have..I buried the fetus myself.”

“It felt like we were being violated by the scientific community.  For the Hawaiian community, taro is not just a plant. It’s a family member. It’s our common ancestor ‘Haloa …. They weren’t satisfied with just taking our land; now they wanted to take our mana, our spirit too.” (source)

“My wife got a huge tumor right breast. I began to seek the reasons. Right next to us, upwind, was an X crop, they spray bio chemicals as you know. After she got the cancer, many women came to our home, showing her they had lost their breasts……..it was then I realized, the rate here per capita is very high.”

“Toxic red dust storms from biotech fields on Molokai and West Kaua’i are linked to making people extremely sick–especially children. On Kaua’i, communities living near biotech fields in Waimea have a particularly high cancer rate.” (source no longer available – was originally Maui Weekly website)

“The first crops snuck in 26 years ago, AB corn. Now, God only knows what their doing, but the weeds are immune to round up now, and they hired people to shoot our deer if they enter the fields.”

“I’m marching today because of the pesticides that these companies use and the inability to keep them on their own fields.  People want proof and the proof is in the people. We have a lot of sick people on this island — cancer, diabetes, ADHD, asthma — all these things are side effects of pesticides. People are putting the dots together. If you do a little bit of your homework you can see the clear connection between pesticide use and all these ailments, this is a sick island.” (source)

This isn’t an experiment on the other side of the world. This is happening right now, on American soil.  Today, an American has no choice but to breathe in air with a toxic particle that may go rogue when it enters her body, resulting in a cancerous tumor, a miscarriage, or some other illness.  That particle is created or released, not unknowingly, by Monsanto.  There is no way to contain things like pollen or chemical sprays. Those who live downwind of these fields are helpless to avoid the poison being released into the air and into the groundwater.

If you haven’t heard about the plight of the islanders, you aren’t alone. In researching this article, I was hard-pressed to find any media coverage that was not based in Hawaii.  Americans are crying out for help…but no one is listening. Their pleas are going unheard because there is an insidious collusion – in the government, in the media, and in the biotech industry.  No one wants to believe that in this day and age, “someone” wouldn’t stop Monsanto.  Many will read this and be incredulous, doubtful that such a thing could go on here in America. But it’s happening.  Today it’s happening in Hawaii. Tomorrow, it might be in the field downwind from you.

Monsanto writes its own laws – that became clear with the passing of the Monsanto Protection rider, if it wasn’t obvious already.  There is a revolving door between Monsanto, Washington DC, the FDA and the USDA, not to mention connections with the Supreme Court. There is a blatant money trail between Monsanto and many of the lawmakers in the US.  Other countries’ governments have said “no” to Monsanto and other biotech firms, but the US does not. The US government is in clear collusion with the biotech industry, and they don’t even try to hide it.

Think about the notoriety of Joseph Mengele, who was reported to have performed horrific, gruesome experiments on human beings in World War II concentration camps.  We look back in horror at the stories of those stomach turning experiments, unable to comprehend how things so awful could be true.  But the people of Molokai are living in an equally callous science project right now.  Is it really any different than these experiments that were labeled as “war crimes”? Any person who has the misfortune to live near a Monsanto field is being subjected daily to toxins that have caused massive illnesses and deaths elsewhere in the world.  They are breathing it, eating it, and drinking it.  Some people are able to resist the toxins, but many others are not.  They are developing tumors and respiratory problems.  They are having to have body parts removed because of cancer. Their skin is covered with bloody sores.  Their children are born dead or with birth defects. When do we say that this is a crime?  When do we insist that the cover-up of the medical statistics cease?  When do we hold Monsanto responsible?

Make no mistake, we are the lab rats in a giant experiment, and the mad scientists are Monsanto.

Thank you to the people who trusted me with their stories, especially to RC.
I hope that I have honored you in the sharing of them.  ~ D

  • Very interesting and saddening article. I was wondering, is there any way to find the location of bt/GMO crops? For instance in Texas? Love your website, thanks!

    • Whitney ~

      Thank you!

I’m not sure how to find this out. Many fields have a sign in them saying that they are Monsanto fields – but I don’t know if this is a requirement or not. Perhaps a state or county department of agriculture? Hopefully someone will chime in with some information on this!

      Daisy

      • The latest said, about 80 percent of American crops are GMO. Everyone remember farm aid? Well, farmers lost all, due to Monsantos power and contracts. Bottom line, the seeds from GMO crops WONT GERMINATE…this is TOTAL control of a nations food supply, and he who controls the food, controls ALL. No army can fight without food, no country survive/ Yes, the realities of all this are a horror story.
Thank you Daisy for bringing the truth to light.
You are a REAL reporter, no lies all truth, ya tell it like it is, most refreshing. Most admirable.

        • This terminator gene thing needs to be permanently corrected: While Monsanto has this gene, it is illegal for them to sell it. (They may still be experimenting with it.) As a small farmer surrounded by large, chemical-dependent farmers, I can assure you, seeds from Monsanto’s GMO crops are very viable. If you follow any news on it, you know Monsanto has won every court case against farmers who saved GMO seed (soy and canola in particular) for planting. They grew and Monsanto sued for non-payment if tech fees. The GMO pollen will fertilize non-GMO crops contaminating them. Farmers have been successfully sued for have Monsanto genes in their crops from cross-pollination. Monsanto owns the genes, but aren’t legally responsible for their pollen drift.

    • Very good idea for a app! I’m sure the corporate giants would slam me with dozens of lawsuits for even attempting to promote such a project though.

  • Yes I was happy to see this article because that question has been on my mind lately. I am moving in July from the Midwest to Texas, and wanted to be aware of my surroundings, mostly due my increasing awful allergies. I hope someone has some info on this!

    • Depending on where you live in Texas, you will be surrounded by GMO cotton, sugar beets, corn, canola, and soybeans. Good luck.

    • You will also get the chemicals they spray for mosquitoes! We just moved to Texas. I’m struggling with the lack of organic and non GMO foods! VERY sad!

  • Great article. Loved it!
I’ve been following this issue for years (as an organic “backyard” farmer and concerned mother/citizen) and it’s amazing just how deep the collusion goes. The government protects them, they make the government money, we suffer and a lot of people have no idea this is going on. I guess maybe paying attention gets in the way of watching network television!! *wink*
I guess I’ll keep marching, writing my legislators, and buying organic non gmo seeds. We’ll keep up the good fight, huh?
I had no idea this was happening on Molokai. Thank you for a thoughtful and in depth article.

  • SABOTAGE MONSANTO.

YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO DEFEND YOURSELF.

BE SURE TO NOT PHYSICALLY HARM ANYONE WHILE DOING SO.

JUST SABOTAGE A MONSANTO FACILITY NEAREST YOU AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.

  • Sabotage is not going to work. They will just make tougher laws against it. You need to be an educated consumer and chose what businesses you support with care. If we stop consuming it, and stop spending our money on products from companies we do not support. You need to do the research and make the tough consumer decisions.

    • Correct, there are more ways to skin a deer………We are working on it, thousands more are on board, we will win by forcing them to label it. The first superior court refused, we will be back..no surrender, no sabotage. We will win like we have won EVERYTHING we have fought. We are together as one voice, change is inevidable, We are the Nation Of Hawaii. Thinkers, free men and women. Aloha.

  • A different topic is that roundup was marketed for 2 decades as a safe pesticide because it decomposed in 1 year (according to Monsanto). During that time, Rodale (Prevention and Organic Gardening magazines) published their studies showing roundup lasted much longer. But who listened or even noticed?

Now we know better (or, at least many of us do). The point being that they were able to insinuate roundup into the culture as pretty safe long ago and now it’s ubiquitous.

  • Has anyone filed a class action lawsuit against this company? This is outrageous and downright horrible!
This company mirrors the corruption of our Dictator Regime.
    Maybe O owns Monsanto now.
But know this…This is NOT true Capitalism that this business is running. This is nothing more than corruption at its highest level by evil murderous hateful Leftists running it! I want to emphasize here, that who runs Monsanto, these are not Capitalists! This is so very sad. This is not only about greed, this is vile and murderous to the Nth degree what they are doing and this looks more like an agenda against America than anything else!

    • I hate to tell you this, Thomas, but leftist/rightist/liberal/conservative really has no place in this argument. This is capitalism run rampant. Our public policy is now formed by corporations who pay BIG money to politicians on BOTH sides of the aisle. It is silly to blame this on left or right. Each politician who accepts money from corporate special interests contributes to this problem. As citizens, we should demand better from ALL of our elected officials. Comprehensive and stiff campaign finance reform needs to happen.

      • I’m a Conservative Right and I would not run a business that way and neither would anyone else who has any morals. Right is right and wrong is wrong! And yes, it does have a place as everything is centered in politics. You cannot get out of division, that is life! Capitalism does not run rampant. If it does something else then that is not capitalism. Screaming against capitalism means you must want communism. Is that what you want? There is nothing else that replaces real Capitalism. How hard is that to understand?

        • This is such a simplistic argument that wholly fails to acknowledge the complexity of … anything. Do you honestly expect to be taken seriously when you write things like this? When you write simplistic, uneducated arguments that so completely lack nuance, people roll their eyes and move to the next post, not giving you or anything you said a second thought. Is your goal to persuade people or to spout off? If you want to persuade people, you should rethink your approach. If you want to spout off, do whatever you would like.

      • True Jana, everyone in high positions are on the payola, we have identified them all, we know whos who. The corruption is rampant, much of it in the form of donations to politicians.

      • I disagree. It is precisely the people who call themself “Conservative” who are supporting this corporate insanity of unlimited profits which have to grow each year.
These profits will never trickle down to them in any way (slave wages and no raises).
They are brainwashed by all the propaganda sources that tell that “Capitalism is always good”. The Koch brothers and their ilk are largely responsible for this too.

As long as we have a stupid fat complacent society who is easily tricked into voting for these Republican scammer liars (by simply exploiting the not-so-bright reactionary populace with hot-button phony issues), we will continue to be enslaved and poisoned further with an environment that is completely destroyed by profits for the 1%

Also, for God’s sake stop buying this poison food! Everytime you buy corn or anything with high fructose corn syrup (almost every processed food now) you are making Monsanto execs richer and you and the planet sicker.

  • Just went to Molokai for the day to visit friends who pointed out the Monsanto building but had no idea about any of this. Saw a large medical team coming back from there to Maui also.

  • Sadly, since the government is being bought off and ignoring the concerns of the residents, what choice do they have but to either go to arms or accept the deaths and suffering of their loved ones?

  • I think it should be pointed out that there are many types of market economies. “Capitalism” is an concept and system that emerged in the 1600s with the breaking up of the civic/guild market economy of Christian Europe – this was do to social turmoil and war. The idea behind this new system was that society could not/should not put limits (either legally or morally) on one’s commericial ambition. Government was often co-opted to “extend the market”, but was not supposed to regulate. This was also called ‘mercantilism’, and later resurrected in Keynesianism, but with a more direct investment approach by the government.

Manchester or Laissez-Faire Capitalism that came about later, but it only lasted a short while before it was realized that this was an unrealistic approach.

Social markets sought to balance out the eefects of the laissez-faire system by introducing policies it thought would create more capitalist. This has its flaws too because it draws on the faults of both capitalism and socialism.

Distributism and solidarism are promising in that they seek to bring about the best of the civic marketplace found in classic Christendom but nuanced to fit contemporary needs.

    • Thanks for the intellectual pedantic gymnastics.
The fact is that this corporate insanity which corrupts out government, puts profits above all else, enslaves and sickens the populace and planet IS LITERALLY RUINING THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!
Use whatever terms you want. IT MUST CHANGE!!!!!

    • Capitalism can be clearly traced back to ancient times. Fact is, for example, the infamous battle of Troy was over the location of Troy relative to ship trade. The beaches of Troy were PERFECT for ship landing and unloading of merchandise. Trade routes from Troy were already in place before the battle for control of Troy. The Trojans used their military government to tax ALL the goods that came through Troy. When the taxes got too high (abusive) for some other groups of people, the 9 year war followed. The Helen of Troy story was a MASK and a LIE (like religion being used as a reason to start a war; the underlying truth is the MONEY that can be made by people who profess a religion). Virtually ALL wars start over human greed, arrogance, vanity, MONEY, or the potential to make money.

  • Solidarism are tied in with Marxism and group think, the collectivism and Catholicism and Political Correctness from Socialism/Communism etc. I don’t care to go back to the middle ages either.

If I don’t get all the material items in this life I would have liked that is fine with me if I didn’t earn it, but I would not want a society telling me I can’t get something if I chose to work hard for it either.
I like where there is something to motivate me. And I don’t want some land to be given to me for free either, I prefer to earn everything I get in this life and to be able to make as much money as I want and not have to be forced to share it if I so desire. There is nothing wrong with that.

I like things built in mass quantity too. It keeps the prices reasonable. As long as people exist, there will always be greed no matter whether you are poor or wealthy or inbetween. Such is the nature of man. But when a business becomes crooked, that is when they need to be shutdown. When a business causes physical harm and sickness and death to people, the laws need to apply and everyone needs to be held accountable or go to prison like any other type of criminal no matter who you are. If you break the reasonable laws of the Land we deserve to pay a penalty. Capitalism is still America’s best for idealism. The freer we are as a people, the more motivation of production and invention and creativity we are. That is what made America great and running. That is why so many in the world have envied us. That is why countries like Japan wanted to be like us. Our laws of the Land need to be enforced and are politicians/government all need to be held accountable. And that is the way I see it. We were never perfect, but we were still far better off and far from being as bad as we were made out to be. Instead of worrying about what others have everyone needs to be willing to work hard. As long as there are bad companies they will exist, but to varying and different degrees. Being held accountable is number #1. We need to have alot more American made companies instead of relying on foreign countries for all of our stuff and jobs too.
Monsanto needs to be shutdown and fined heavily and a Class action lawsuit put against them and those responsible many years in prison.

  • Saw a report today where many people in Europe where GMO is not allowed are having urine test that are positive for the herbacide Round up which is the chemical that GMO crops are resitant to.

  • Engineered Poisons are found in common everyday foods such as, infant formula, salad dressing, bread, cereal, hamburgers and hotdogs, margarine, mayonnaise, cereals, crackers, cookies, chocolate, candy, fried food, chips, veggie burgers, meat substitutes, ice cream, frozen yogurt, tofu, tamari, soy sauce, soy cheese, tomato sauce, protein powder, baking powder, alcohol, vanilla, powdered sugar, peanut butter, enriched flour and pasta and hundreds of things that you would never suspect.

Europeans must easily question our sanity. Thirty countries, including Australia, Japan and all European countries have banned or have significant restrictions on GMO’s. The US FDA continues to protect corporations rather than humans, based on studies created by the very same companies who profit from the sale of GMO’s. We live in a twisted, corrupt world.

Americans keep hoping that we might get GMO labeling laws passed. Yet, apparently not enough Americans care about what goes into their mouths, as they keep swallowing the poisons.

When we vote with our dollars and categorically reject ALL packaged foods containing any GMO ingredients, then even giants fail.

  • I can vouch for the truthfulness of this article. It is not only Molokai, but also Maui where I lived next to one of Monsanto corn seed crop, growing only 2 feet high with full ears of corn. No trespassing signs posted everywhere with stiff penalties if caught trespassing. I have friends that work for them, they provide jobs for the people, but they don’t realize the consequences…so sad. All we can do is do our best to be healthy and keep our immune system strong by eating organic, clean food as much as possible, avoiding harmful foods and activities. Not eating processed food, by which consuming more GMO is likely.

  • What an absolute disgrace! In my dreams I am invisible and shoot them all, starting right at the top with the elite. But you know what works better strangely enough? Sending them love! It takes a while to learn how to do it (because you need to slowly shift to love when you already hate them so bad) but I’ve done it and I even see them shrivel and lose power in my minds eye when it happens – not something I’m imagining on purpose but what was shown to me happens – we can win the war with Love. Another big crime committed to us is to believe we are powerless without action, that love is “wishy washy” not powerful. Not shown how to use it. I recommend the ebook “Messenger of Love” by Klaus Joehle. He taught me how to do this, he is amazing! You can sometimes find it free if you look around. Please do send love! We need to approach this is a new enlightened way, hate breeds hate, fighting them creates more fighting. What we resist, persists. Love is a force they cannot fight. Another good read (free online) is Ho’oponopono. Come on people, I’m sure this started in Hawaii! 😀 You know what to do.

  • I do hate these types of issues. Are we safe, not safe? FDA doesn’t care. They are after the money trail. You can’t have your own small animals, like chickens, rabbits, etc in towns anymore! Even organic foods cost so much more than most people can afford these days.

    • Patricia, The FDA doesn’t care because they are headed by a former Monsanto Vice President– Michael Taylor. The FDA exists to protect big Pharma and corporate Food. They could care less about the public.

      • Bob The FDA/Government connection is the heart of the problem. Only consumers can break this strangle hold by pushing for labeling and once the consumers knows; it will be exactly like Europe where GMO’s failed miserably. In fact Monsanto pulled out of Europe this summer.

  • they are doomed! more and more i keep hearing about gmo crops. it will take a while but they will lose the fight!

  • GUESS we will just have to trust in Yahuwah to provide manna from heaven,,after we have rejected the rfid script,,n know that He is our Healer,, let us put down all our idols of worship included pele..and the whole host of false gods, n turn out eyes unto the Creator of All There Is,,, He Who Exists will bow before you presenting gifts,,He will Illuminate the Wholeness of HIs Being towards you providing you with a hedge of protection,,He will lift up the Wholeness of HIs Being , look on you, n set in place all that you need to be whole n complete,,, amein,,theHaronicBlessing,,numbers 6{24=27} this is the true hebraic interpretation,,it doesnt get much better than this..so let us repent for not acknowleging His Majesty on High,,

  • I would just like to point out that you make a big stink about a french farmer being harmed by Lasso/alachlor, which is a completely different herbicide from Roundup/glyphosate. This fact is important because the safety of Roundup is widely recognized and its use allows farmers to minimize their exposure to more toxic herbicides like Lasso. Killing off Roundup will merely bring back wider use of the older herbicides, which is hardly a step forward in environmental safety.

I should also point out that your references to “POEA contains Dioxin” are groundless. A bunch of web sites repeat this claim in an interlocking chain, but there is no original source in a reputable document the finds Dioxin in commercial preparations of PEOA. Which, if you think about it, makes perfect sense as there is no plausible synthetic pathway by which the precursors to POEA lead Dioxin. We can safely toss this claim into the bin of “scary stories that don’t stand up to the least bit of scrutiny.”

Please, for the sake the Left and for the reputation of the environmental movement, be more careful about the stories you pass along. Nonsense like this makes us look like fearful ninnies, easily mocked by our enemies and ignored by the regulatory authorities.
